Menu for the Week of November 26, 2012 — Don’t Stop Supporting Your Farmers Yet!

We hope everyone had a safe and satisfying Thanksgiving.  If you’re like us and had to leave the leftovers at someone else’s house, we have housemade turkey pot pies this week, new smoked chickens, and a turkey terrine with dijon and apples.  Delicious!

So, we know at this point in the year, it’s a mad dash to New Years Eve, but we wanted to remind you all that the farmers markets have just under a month still to go, so please don’t forget about your local farmers and their delicious winter harvest!  Farmers often lament that this time of year much of their harvest goes to waste because of a sharp decline in market attendance, so show them you care by attending a farmers market in the next month!

Finally, in the spirit of celebrating small, local artisans, we wanted to take the opportunity in this post to say congratulations to Tim Young of Nature’s Harmony Farm.  2012 has been a banner year for Nature’s Harmony Farm.  Hailing from Elberton, Georgia, Tim and his cheeses are making quite a splash both nationally and internationally.  Early this year, Tim’s Fortsonia — which we have in the shop right now — a raw, Jersey milk gruyere style cheese, earned a gold medal at the Isle of Jersey Food Festival in the U.K.  Later, in August, it took a bronze medal in its class at the American Cheese Society conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, and most recently was named the best Southern-made food by Garden & Gun magazine.  Not too shabby!  The Fortsonia is a lovely raw cow’s milk cheese that is currently showing about nine months of aging — just enough aging to start exhibiting a bit of granularity in the semi-firm texture. The flavor leans towards a buttery grassiness, followed by a perfectly sweet finish.  This cheese is a lovely table cheese that can be enjoyed with a few slices of charcuterie and a glass of red wine, but it will also elevate any dish for which you might use an Alpine-style cheese. Don’t miss out on this unique Georgia product.

Stay Hungry Atlanta!  And don’t forget our new retail hours — We are now open on Tuesdays, and our weekday hours are Noon to 8 p.m.!
