Menu for the Week of May 11, 2015 — Kirkwood Spring Fling is This Weekend!

A lot of people know the story about how The Spotted Trotter landed in Kirkwood with its first shop, but the coming of the 13th Annual Kirkwood Spring Fling this weekend made us realize that we have a lot of new customers since opening Krog that may not know.  Kevin and I moved to Kirkwood in 2005, after we both left Athens to start our careers in “the big city”! Kirkwood is nestled between Candler Park and Decatur, and is a wonderful community that has really started to make its mark as a desired location to live in the past 5 years.

When we were looking for places to open The Spotted Trotter, we knew we’d be spending a lot of time there, so we wanted it to be close to the house, but we also wanted to make a significant investment in the community we called our own.  Passing by 1610 Hosea on our way to work most days, we saw the corner spot turn over as a sandwich spot and then a coffee shop.  We hated seeing it empty, and knew that a lot of our business was wholesale and thus we didn’t need drive-by traffic anyway to survive.  So, we opened a USDA facility with an SBA loan in late 2011, started increasing our wholesale business, but invested in a small retail space as well.

Well, all we can say is THANK YOU to Kirkwood for your amazing support of us over the last 4 or so years.  The small retail space has exceeded expectations and quickly became an important part of our bottomline.  Although Kevin and I don’t man the counter like we did 4 years ago when we were the only 2 employees, we still see familiar faces dropping in and it’s amazing to know that the concept of the “neighborhood butcher” is alive and well, at least in Kirkwood, Georgia!

Come this weekend and see why we love Kirkwood so much!  Start the day off with the 5K, stroll through the artists market in Bessie Branham Park, catch some live music with a bite to eat from local vendors or the BBQ competition, and then let the kids go wild in the kids area. Best of all, admission is free.  Click HERE to learn more, and we hope to see you at the Festival and then at the shop this weekend.  If you need a break from the festivities, our porch with picnic tables is just waiting for you!
