Menu for the Week of August 19, 2013 — An Inspirational Trip to Martha’s Vineyard!

With all that we have going on these days, we finally took the words Carpe Diem to heart last week and took a trip to Martha’s Vineyard to visit family friends that we know we won’t have the opportunity to see again for quite a while.  Kevin grew up going to the island in Summer to visit the Gildroys but had not been back in probably 20 years, so it was a relaxing, inspiring, and nostalgic trip all wrapped in to one.  For me, it was my first time to the island, and it was absolutely magical.  It’s hard to rank the best parts of the trip, as they were so numerous and the trip happened so fast, but I’ll do my best.  Perhaps the most exciting part of the weekend for me was visiting the MV Farmer’s Market where we rubbed elbows with the Nor’easter versions of all of us.  They welcomed us with open arms, and we loved speaking with them and tasting their delicious goods all grown on the island (albeit for a very short growing season).  A trip to a farm and its bustling store earlier in the day — Morning Glory Farm — was just the warm-up, and we couldn’t decide whether we liked their freshly picked corn or homemade bleu cheese better — talk about variety and doing it all!   Regardless, each went well as an appetizer before we ate linguine with clams (Aunt Betsy’s own recipe passed down generations), made with quahogs, that we plucked right out of the salt water pond in front of where we were staying, the same pond that “Jaws” was filmed.  This was my first “quahogging” experience, and it was amazing, although I could have done without the crab that bit my toe.  Finally, Kevin and I ended the weekend with a dinner outside at The Sweet Life, the second restaurant for a husband and wife duo (sound familiar!?) in historic Oak Bluffs.  The meal was absolutely fantastic, as we sat outside under the stars in the crisp night air.  We were told President Obama had been there the night before, and I can tell you that if he had the scallops, heirloom tomato salad, peaches with truffle oil, or short ribs, we are pretty confident that he left with a sense of pride about the young restaurant and a full belly.

I hope everyone has the ability to visit this island once in their life, as it was everything Kevin had told me it would be and more.  We want to Thank Betsy and CL for having us in their beautiful home.

That being said, landing back in Atlanta late last night, driving by the site of our future shop at Krog, and running by our store after it cranked out another wonderful weekend made me so happy to be home too.  This post is dedicated to our wonderful employees, without whom we would never have had the confidence to step away for this trip.  Thank you for being a part of our family and making us so proud to come home to this city and our lives.  Oh, and thanks also for not burning the place down while we were gone 🙂 .  Lastly, take a look at the Crepinettes this week for some delicious Lamb and Organic Feta as well as the delicious Dried Hot Soppressata finished with the fiery heat of Calabrian Red Pepper (It will also be featured on a Pizza at The Argosy this week). Come by the shop too this week as we feature an amazing Ox Tail Terrine with Layers of Blue Cheese!
